The New Nonsurgical Face Lift
For Lines of Expression
Botox and Dysport are similar products that are administered in a simple, nonsurgical procedure to temporarily relax muscles that cause us to look worried, angry, or just plain older. The procedure is officially FDA approved to treat the frown line between the brow (glabella), but we use it for other locations too—forehead lines, crow’s feet, lip lines, platysmal bands (neck lines), and around the eyebrow for a subtle eye lift. The procedure is very quick and painless, with visible results within a few days to a week. The lessening of wrinkles seen with botulinum toxin administration can last an average of 3-4 months.
For Excessive Sweating
Many people are plagued with excessive sweating—a condition termed hyperhidrosis. For those affected, this is an embarrassing condition that affects daily life and sometimes dictates clothing choices and activities. Botox and Dysport block the nerve receptor that controls sweating. When the product is administered to the area affected, it can significantly reduce the amount of sweating to a more normal level. It is possible that this procedure could be considered a covered medical service through insurance.
If you’d like to restore youthful fullness to your face, enjoy plump lips, enhance shallow contours or soften facial wrinkles, dermal fillers may be the answer. Dermal fillers have been called “liquid facelifts” because they offer many of the benefits of a surgical facelift without the downtime. Although they can’t help with excess sagging skin, these soft tissue fillers can add more volume and provide results at a lower cost than surgery. Dermal fillers are often used in conjunction with other skin rejuvenation treatments such as injections of botulinum toxin. There are many different brands and types of dermal fillers. Those offered at Mansfield Dermatology are listed below.
Collagen is what gives volume, flexibility and strength to healthy, young skin. As a part of the aging process, your own natural collagen breaks down, diminishing facial volume and elasticity. This loss of elasticity and volume results in wrinkles, facial lines and skin laxity – all of which rob your skin of its youthful, fresh appearance. Ideal wrinkle reduction is achieved by replenishing your skin’s lost volume. Upon injection, RADIESSE® Volumizing Filler immediately provides the volume and lift needed to diminish the signs of aging because of the calcium-based microspheres and gel that comprise the product. But what’s unique about RADIESSE Volumizing Filler is that it acts as a scaffold under the skin, providing structure and stimulating your own natural collagen to grow. This process continues for several months, which extends the initial effect of RADIESSE Volumizing Filler. Best of all, the natural results are clinically proven to last a year or more in many patients.
JUVÉDERM® is a smooth gel filler that instantly smoothes away wrinkles around your mouth and nose. With just one treatment, you’ll get smooth and natural-looking results that last up to a year. It is composed of hyaluronic acid, which is a natural substance normally found in the skin. It is infused with lidocaine to improve comfort during treatment. JUVÉDERM® is also used to give more fullness to the lips.
Sculptra is different from traditional fillers in the way that it works in your skin. Traditional fillers provide immediate volume in the area treated, whereas Sculptra is a facial injectable that works gradually in a series of treatments–on average, three injection sessions over a few months — for a subtle, more youthful looking appearance. The active ingredient—poly-L-lactic acid— has been used safely for decades in dissolvable stitches and as a facial injectable since 1999 in over 30 countries. This material is gradually reabsorbed by the body, but it works to improve one’s appearance by stimulating the skin to produce collagen. Optimal results are seen within 6-9 months. This reinforced collagen structure provides a foundation that gradually restores the look of fullness of your shallow to deep facial wrinkles and folds that have developed over time.
A chemical peel is one of the least invasive ways to improve the appearance of your skin. Sun damage, prior acne scars, or just getting older can cause uneven skin tone and texture. Chemical peels are procedures done by our aestheticians, where a chemical solution is applied to the skin to cause the damaged outer layers of the skin to gradually slough off. Although chemical peels are used mostly on the face, they can also be used to improve the skin on your neck and hands.
Chemical peels may help the following skin conditions:
- Acne or acne scars
- Age and liver spots
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Irregular skin pigmentation
- Rough skin and scaly patches
- Sun-damaged skin
MICROPEEL PLUS DERMAPLANING
The SkinCeuticals Micropeel is a three-step clinical procedure combining dermaplaning (physical exfoliation), chemical exfoliation, and cryogenic therapy to reduce signs of photoaging including fine lines, wrinkles, dullness, and visible skin imperfections in a series of 4-6 procedures.

The Micropeel Plus procedure is a unique one-step treatment of chemical exfoliation designed to reduce acne, keep problematic skin clear of breakouts, and help correct enviormental skin damage. Micropeel Plus 30 Solution is formulated with a combination of salicylic acid to refine pores and help reduce the appearance of acne and glycolic acid to aid in the improvement of rough texture, blotchiness, and uneven skin tone. One week following a Micropeel Plus procedure, skin will undergo its renewal process and light to moderate peeling may occur.
GEL PEEL SM
Combined, salicylic and mandelic acid work synergistically to exfoliate the skin while decongesting pores and reducing irritation. This is an ideal treatment for acne prone skin. This light chemical peel revitalizes sensitive skin and helps improve the appearance of problematic skin.
GEL PEEL GL
Combined, glycolic and lactic acid work synergistically to exfoliate the skin while reducing irritation and dryness. By accelerating the cell renewal process, stimulating collagen synthesis, and improving elastin fibers in the dermis, this light chemical peel revitalizes photodamaged skin and helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Trichloracetic acid (TCA) peels are considered medium-depth peels. They reach slightly deeper into the skin than alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) peels–and thus often produce stronger results. TCA is a skin-resurfacing treatment: it removes dead skin cells, uncovering a “new” layer of skin that appears smoother and more vibrant. As a result, it softens fine lines, minimizes superficial “age” spots and other skin discolorations, and generally improves the tone and texture of your skin. TCA peels are also very popular for diminishing the appearance of acne scars.
Lasers are devices that emit a high intensity, specific wavelength of light that can penetrate into the skin and affect a certain target without damaging the surrounding skin and soft tissue. There are many different lasers available today to treat a variety of skin conditions.
At Mansfield Dermatology, we have lasers
that may address the following concerns:
- Hair removal
- Acne and acne scarring
- Sun spots
- Broken blood vessels on the face
- Spider veins
- Angiomas (red spots on the skin)
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Sun damage (red/brown blotchy discoloration of the skin)
Ultherapy is a revolutionary treatment that uses ultrasound waves to lift and tighten the skin. The sound waves are very focused and intense energy that penetrates deep into the skin at the same level addressed in surgery. The ultrasound delivered into the skin gently heats the tissue and stimulates the skin to produce collagen—resulting in a lifting and tightening effect on loose skin without cutting or disrupting the surface of the skin. The creation of new collagen also give the skin a more youthful glow. This procedure is used around the eyes to lift the brow, which in turn reduces the excess skin on the lids, opens up the eyes and gives a more refreshed appearance. It is also used on the lower face—cheeks, chin, and neck—to provide a lower face and neck lift, resulting in a more defined jawline and a reduction in the skin laxity of the lower face and neck.
There isn’t a replacement for the dramatic effects of surgery, but Ultherapy offers a natural, ‘no downtime’ approach to noticeably improving lax skin.
Do you have stubborn fat that will not go away despite earnest efforts at diet and exercise? Coolsculpting is an innovative, noninvasive procedure that can eliminate fat cells in a simple office procedure. The science behind CoolSculpting by Zeltiq™, called Cryolipolysis™, was developed by dermatologists at Harvard Medical School. Their research demonstrated that fat cells are naturally more sensitive to the effects of cold. By using advanced tissue cooling technology, CoolSculpting by Zeltiq™ can destroy fat cells through a controlled cooling process leaving the surrounding tissues unharmed.
The most common areas treated are the lower abdomen and love handles (aka “muffin top”), but any area of pesky fat can be targeted, such as inner thighs, back fat, and excess breast tissue in men. After a virtually painless procedure, clinical improvement is evident within 2 to 4 months.
Fraxel treatment uses patented fractional technology to target damaged skin with microscopic laser columns that penetrate deep into the skin. The laser treats only a fraction of tissue at a time, leaving the surrounding tissue untouched, which promotes rapid healing. This stimulates your body’s own natural healing process, replacing the old and damaged cells with fresh, glowing, healthy skin.
The results are both immediate and progressive. Soon after the treatment, the surface of your skin will feel softer and smoother, look brighter and show a more even tone. The next 3 to 6 months will bring more improvement as the deeper layers of the skin continue to create new collagen. Results are long lasting depending on your lifestyle, age, skin condition and skin care regimen.
Desired outcomes are typically reached in multiple treatments. The specific number of treatments is tailored to your goals and desired results as well as your lifestyle. We will work with you to identify the appropriate level of treatment and your preferred downtime.
Depending on the level of the treatment, you may experience redness or swelling after the procedure which diminishes as quickly as the next day or over the next several days. Your skin will naturally bronze over the next week or two. As you continue with the treatment sessions, the sunburned-to-bronzed appearance will repeat after each treatment. As with a sunburn, your skin will flake and exfoliate normally, revealing fresher, glowing and smoother looking and feeling skin.
Fraxel treatment is a safe option backed by extensive research. Of course, as with any laser procedure there’s always some risk* and/or downtime. You should discuss this with your clinician prior

PHOTODYNAMIC THERAPY (PDT) WITH BLUE LIGHT
This treatment is FDA approved for the treatment of actinic keratoses– precancerous lesions on the skin from sun damage that can develop into skin cancer if left untreated. It involves the application of Levulan (aminolevulinic acid 20%) to affected skin and allowing it to incubate for 45 minutes to an hour. The solution is absorbed by the precancerous cells, where it is converted to a chemical that makes the cells extremely sensitive to light. The skin is then exposed to the BLU-U Blue Light Illuminator, and a reaction occurs which destroys the precancerous cells without damaging normal skin. This is a great treatment option for individuals with significant sun damage. It is a simple, quick, in office procedure. It causes a sunburn-like reaction on the skin that resolves within one week. It is very effective in treating the precancerous lesions, but patients also enjoy the cosmetic response, as the majority of patients treated report a significant improvement in the look and feel of their skin. Patients treated with Levulan should avoid exposure to sun for 48 hours post procedure.
